Allen Dental and dental insurance: Since we opened our new clinic, dental insurance companies have solicited our office for participation in their PPO plans. PPO’s are designed to lower the cost of dental care for their subscribers. They accomplish this by contracting with dentists who agree to accept a lower fee for many, if not all, of their services. Obviously this plan appeals to many patients, although many patients do not realize the potential risk involved. For instance, some dentists try to compensate for the lower reimbursement fees by increasing the volume of patients they treat each day, and therefore not giving as much time and attention as the patient deserves. Other dentists may attempt to lower their overhead by using cheaper materials, cheaper dental labs, and not keeping up with continuing education and technology. Of course, whether the patient is even aware of it or not, these approaches can adversely affect the level of care the patient receives.
