Bassett-Hyland Energy Company is a family owned and operated Chevron jobbership that serves the Coos and Douglas County areas of Southwestern Oregon. Maurie Bassett began working for the Standard Oil Company of California in 1959. Working at first with one truck and himself as the only employee, he began delivering fuels and lubricants to loggers and dairy farmers in the Hebo/Cloverdale area along the northern Oregon coast. After several years at the coast he was transferred back to the Willamette valley where he operated the bulk plant in Stayton, serving the farming communities in that area and the logging operations of the entire North Santiam river canyon. 1970 found Maurie on the move once again as he was sent north to Camas, Washington. This operation required the addition of two drivers to serve the greater Camas/Washougal area and included the Crown Zellerbach paper mill in Camas. After a brief three year stay in Washington, Maurie was sent to the Southern Oregon coast to take over Chevron’s marine and truck terminal in Coos Bay. After a few years serving the greater Coos County area including accounts like Weyerhaeuser’s mill sites and woods operations, Chevron closed their Reedsport and Myrtle Point facilities and incorporated them into the Coos Bay area. In 1980 Chevron changed their business plan and their wholesale distributors were forced to become jobbers. At that time Harold Hyland, the distributor in Roseburg, joined Maurie to form Bassett-Hyland Energy Company. This increased the marketing area of Bassett-Hyland Energy Company to include Coos and Douglas Counties all the way from the Coast to the crest of the Cascades. Maurie and Harold are now both enjoying retirement while Maurie’s three sons and daughter work in the business. Many things have changed since those one truck/one man days of the sixties. BHEC now operates two bulk facilities, three gas stations, three cardlock sites and employs upwards of 45 people. Through all the changes, our commitment to our customers to provide quality products and superior service at competitive prices still remains our goal and our promise to you.

My Review of Coos Bay Toyota: I am so pleased with the excellence in customer service at Coos Bay Toyota. From the ladies at the front desk to the parts department (thanks Mike) to the work by the service department I encountered high standards, promptness and attention to detail all in a friendly, clean, orderly atmosphere (even the ladies room was clean and cheerful). I was especially impressed with Jerry the Service Dept Manager and the way he conducts his operation. The shop is busy and well-ordered - (no cursing - no sense of carelessness) and Jerry just feels like a wise, caring friend. The worked I required was done - plus they mounted my new license plates and returned the car nicely WASHED with no fanfare for their efforts. Jerry indicated;that's just what we do and our boss sets the tone for the overall business, I spoke with Mr. Hawthorne the owner and again was impressed with the quiet commitment to respectful service to the customer. The combination of courtesy, focus and modesty inspired my trust. I have been dreading buying another car because of the pressures and games that go on, however after my experience with Coos Bay Toyota servicing my car and after reading other reviews on this website, I feel comfortable at this dealership. Each member of Mr. Hawthorne's team helped inspire my trust in the dealership. This may very well result in the purchase of my next vehicle.
