I began my career in the swimming pool industry in 1968 after returning from my second tour of duty in Vietnam as a heavy equipment operator in the US Navy SeeBees (USMCB9). I answered an ad in a San Diego newspaper looking for salesmen to sell residential swimming pools in San Diego County for the ‘World’s Largest Pool Builder’; Anthony Pools. Even though I knew absolutely nothing about swimming pool sales (or swimming pools in general) I decided to answer that ad & the rest as they say ‘is history’! Mr. Ray Anthony (one of the founding Anthony Pools brothers) was the general manager in San Diego at that time & I was extremely fortunate to have the privilege to learn from one of the original ‘pioneers’ in this industry! I went through many weeks of training prior to actually being allowed to starting selling pools. We laughingly referred to our training as “Anthony Pool School”. We not only were trained in sales & swimming pools in general but, most importantly I believe, in proper ‘time management’ skills. I started as a part time salesman with Anthony Pools, later becoming North San Diego County Sales Manager, then a number of years later (after leaving & then returning for a brief period), was made General Manager over a six county area of Southern California. It was this experience with a large volume builders & the problems inherent in building in volume, that led me to becoming a contractor. I knew there had to be a better way! My company is, & has always been, based on the belief that ‘the customers’ needs are of the utmost importance & I am totally committed to meeting those needs. I can back that up by stating that; after almost 48 years in this industry I have never had a complaint filed against me with the CA State Contractors License Board (CSLB) or a legal action taken against me by a customer! In this industry, that’s almost unheard of! As a result, a high percentage of my business is, & has been for many years, from repeat customers and referrals.
