As a Credit Union Service Organization (CUSO), Member Access Pacific serves as an advocate for credit unions in the card processing industry. For more than ten years, MAP has been a stable and trusted card-processing services partner for the areas largest and smallest credit unions. MAP offers the right mix of experience and expertise to help credit union members feel safe when they use our products, while helping client financial institutions reach their potential no matter their asset size or goals. The adoption of debit cards by credit union members has grown steadily since MAP began processing debit services in 1999.When we started, debit card use represented less than ten percent of the market, with consumers still preferring to use checks and cash to this newer, more convenient technology.Today, the debit card market in the U.S. has grown to 50 percent of all non-cash transactions mirroring the growth of our technology partner, Visa, who processes more than 40 percent of all debit transactions. Adoption of Visa DPS in 1999 by Member Access Pacific seemed a calculated risk at the time, but eventually made it possible for credit unions, no matter the size, to grow along with Visa -- reaping all of the benefits of the world's leading financial services provider. The advantages of debit over cash and checking transactions are many, including greater security, convenience, and value, to name a few. Now, as debit supplants credit in terms of consumer choice for electronic transactions, debit processing has grown to become a key component of credit unions’ income and cost savings structure.
