If you want pretentious expensive but first rate Italian food, go to Lidia Bastianich's Felidia just 7 blocks uptown and spend $200 a couple. If you want a family owned neighborhood restaurant that wants to be the best that it is, try Mimi's. All food is freshly made, nothing frozen, canned or bought from Sysco distribution.
