The main principle governing the award of child support by the Alabama courts is that children should be able to keep the same standard of living after divorce as they would have if the family unit had remained intact. If one parent has custody, the noncustodial parents share is normally paid to the custodial parent, or by both parents to a third party, if a third party has custody.
