Welcome to Trailhead Spirits! Trailhead Spirits is a small batch, craft distillery located in Billings, Montana, owned and operated by the McGowan family. We manufacture award-winning spirits in our beautiful 300-liter copper still. Our Montana-made gin and vodka (and soon--whiskey) is available in our tasting room and at local bars and restaurants. Ask for Healy's Gin and Great North Vodka at your local drinking establishment! For 125 years, and four generations, distilling Montana-made spirits was our family destiny. In the 1900s, wheat and barley harvesting took hold in North Central Montana, and the McGowan family, led by Frank McGowan (Casey's great-grandfather) began harvesting these crops. Today, we still work the original land, which is the primary source for our distilled products. Michael Healy, Casey's other great-grandfather, also owned several liquor establishments in Southwestern, Montana in the early 1900s. During Prohibition, he sold tobacco, coffee, and candy in the storefront while running a successful, "behind-closed-doors" speakeasy. Michael was well-known as a moon-shining bootlegger, but well-position politically with law enforcement, attorneys, and judges as friends. He sold his beloved establishment to a friend for $1 upon his retirement. It's safe to say the alcohol business runs strong in the McGowan family. The way to great tasting spirits is the quality of their ingredients. We firmly believe in that correlation, so we choose to use only the best quality wheat raised on our family farm. We ferment, distill, dilute, filter, label, and bottle all our products on site. We are proud to present Great North Vodka, made from Montana-raised wheat and pure mountain water; Healy's Gin (named for Michael Healy), a modern American gin balanced with Juniper and Coriander, as well as hops and other native plants to give it a local flair; and Healy's Reserved Gin, our award-winning Healy's gin aged in oak whiskey barrels to give it a smooth, oak-infused taste. All of our products can be found in our on-site tasting room, and in local bars and establishments. Trailhead Spirits encourages you to ask for it at your local drinking establishment!
