Mike Stahl started Spoon River Blacktop in Astoria, Illinois in June of 1984. Mike and his wife, Paula, along with their children, started estimates on the weekends. Eventually a full time estimator was needed. they bought blacktop mix from local plans until 1997 when started their own asphalt plant. Spoon river Blacktop really is a family owned and operated business. Paula, Mike's wife, has been the secretary since day one running out of their home. Their son, Matthew, grew up working with the crew and now is part owner of the business. He will eventually take over the business. His wife, Monica, has also started working for the company. Mike and Paula's daughter, Ashley, works part tie in the office.
