Our team of experienced doctors and professional staff work closely our patients, providing treatment, education and support to help them return to an independent and active lifestyle. If you talk to Stephen Smith, M.D., an orthopaedic surgeon in Norfolk, he’ll tell you that, “It was necessary to create a seamless experience for the orthopaedic patient — from the physician’s office through rehabilitation.” Until now, if you were a patient having total joint replacement done at this hospital, you could expect to spend several hours in the preadmission process, according to Nelson. “We are limited in space when accommodating surgical patients and doing preadmission workup on orthopaedic patients,” said Nelson. “At times we have had to move to the back hallway to interview the patients. Sometimes a surgical patient would be wheeled past to the operating room, so patient privacy became an issue.” In 2005, Dr. Smith performed 350 total joint surgeries at Faith Regional, a number that surpasses volumes for the same procedures done at other major hospitals in Nebraska. The volume of surgical patients at Faith Regional has continued to increase as well. Through the implementation of the PAT classes, the committee has been able to develop a streamlined system that benefits our orthopaedic patients by creating: • An interdisciplinary approach bringing all disciplines together at one time for patient education. • An excellent environment to present information. • Less distraction and noise reducing unnecessary stress for patient. • Efficiencies for hospital employees. Lunch is provided and patients learn about what they can expect with their surgery experience and have tests completed that same day. “Better educated patients have better outcomes,” added Dr. Smith. “We want to make this experience effortless for them.”"

A sleep disorder is a condition that abnormally affects the quality, duration, or behavior of a person's sleep. Sleep deprivation can lower a person's quality of life & increase the risk for injuries. Up to 50% of individuals with sleep apnea have high blood pressure. They’re also at increased risk for: • arrhythmia, or irregular heart rhythm • cor pulmonale, or enlargement & weakening of the right side of the heart • heart attack • pulmonary hypertension, or high blood pressure in the lungs • stroke A Sleep Center study can pinpoint the nature & cause of your sleep problem & provide an effective treatment plan. At the Faith Regional Sleep Disorder Center patients begin with a sleep consultation to discuss his/her sleeping habits, lifestyle & health history. If a sleep study is recommended, he/she will stay overnight in one of the specially designed rooms, much like a room found in one’s own home, & will have devices attached to record sleeping patterns, breathing oxygen levels, brain waves, heartbeat, breathing effort & other parameters to detect problems during sleep. After the data is analyzed, the patient is called in for follow-up care & treatment. Faith Regional has been providing comprehensive sleep disorder services to the region since 1993. Sleep studies can usually be scheduled within 2 to 3 weeks & individuals don’t need a physician’s order to schedule a consultation.
