In 1918, when he arrived from Switzerland speaking almost no English, Patriarch August Zendt started his dream of a landscape company with one small pickup truck. As each of his three sons graduated from MSU with horticultural degrees, they joined him and built one of Michigan’s most prestigious landscape companies – Zendt’s Landscaping. In 1994, Jack and Barbara Zendt saw the need for a supply yard that would offer a wide range of landscape and pond material with outstanding service for the contractor; in an inviting and informative atmosphere friendly enough for homeowners too – and Rocks ‘N’ Roots was born. Today, Rocks ‘N’ Roots is a fourth-generation family owned and operated company with over 160 combined years of hands-on experience. Located on Van Dyke just south of 29 mile, it is in an area of amazing growth. The first thing a customer will notice at Rocks ‘N’ Roots is the vast selection. From over 40 types of decorative stone, 18 mulches (both bulk and bagged), topsoil, sand, natural walls and flag, and the major brands of man-made and pavers including Unilock, Oaks, Consumers, Fendt and Belgard – the most trusted and well known names in the industry – to pond kits, chemicals, fish and bird food, as well as transformers, low-voltage lights, sprinklers heads and lines, tools, fittings and so much more, Rocks ‘N’ Roots has it all. Everything is on display, and much of it is showcased in beautiful paver and flagstone walkways, ponds, waterfalls, bubbling rocks, decorative retaining walls and beds of stone and mulch. There is a 7,000 sq. ft. store with lighting, plus more pond and waterfall displays. Rocks ‘N’ Roots is constantly evolving the inventory to better service its clientele. If there is something they do not carry they will try to find it, and if it is something that a customer uses often, they will stock it. The sales staff always greets customers with a smile and makes them right at ease, happy to help them with their project, large or small.
