It was given to the City of Ashland in 1912 by local philanthropists J.L. Clark and his wife, Mary. Mr. and Mrs. Clark decided to build Samaritan Hospital after hearing a Sunday School lesson about the Good Samaritan, noting Ashland needed “a hospital where no sick person would ever be refused care.”
