The Sentinel is a news organization that delivers news, sports, community and breaking news on multiple platforms for Cumberland County and in Central Pennsylvania. Our print edition features a circulation of 14,000 and publishes 365 days a year. Our website (www.cumberlink.com) delivers around-the-clock information with the help of our Facebook and Twitter accounts and daily email blasts. Our website reaches approximately 204,000 unique visitors each month and 1.9 million page views per month. We have been in business since 1861 and are owned by Lee Enterprises, Inc., a leading publisher of small- and mid-sized newspapers based in Davenport, Iowa. The Valley Sentinel was founded in Shippensburg in April of 1861, published as a weekly throughout the Civil War and then entered a period of instability, enduring frequent ownership changes and even bankruptcy. In 1874, the newspaper moved from Shippensburg to Carlisle, where it struggled to make a name for itself in the face of already established competition. The Sentinel eventually flourished and acquired a building of its own. In 1884, an 85-year dynasty began as the Thompson family took control of The Sentinel in the midst of a battle for supremacy with The Carlisle Herald. The newspaper moved its operation to its current location at East North Street in Carlisle in 1953. The ownership of the Thompson family drew to a close and finally ended with the sale of the newspaper to Howard Publications in May of 1968. The Sentinel opened offices in Shippensburg and started The Shippensburg Sentinel in 1997 and entered cyberspace early with the launch of Cumberlink in July 1995. Lee Enterprises, a leading publisher of small and mid-sized newspapers based in Davenport, Iowa, purchased the newspaper in 2002 along with 15 other Howard Publications newspapers. We publish a daily newspaper delivered in the morning, Monday through Sunday. Our total market coverage weekly newspapers - The Carlisle Weekly and The Perry County Weekly - are delivered to approximately 17,000 and 19,000 non-subscribers, respectively, in our primary market. In September 1997, we added a twice weekly Shippensburg Sentinel that is delivered to 8,000 households on Wednesdays and 13,000 households on Fridays in Shippensburg, Newburg, Orrstown, Roxbury, Lurgan and Walnut Bottom.
