Sunrise Montessori in Billings, Montana is a place where children come to learn, grow and discover themselves. To cast a ray of light and pass it on.” - Dr. Maria Montessori Curriculum The Montessori Method focuses on four different areas or avenues: Practical Life Sensorial Language Math Each avenue is arranged with hands-on lessons that range from beginning to advanced. Children are allowed to work self-paced and teachers are guides who follow the child’s interests. In addition to the core Montessori avenues we also present lessons in: Geography: where we study the universe, how we fit in, and our place in the community Science: with discovery based lessons in botany and zoology Art: based on the Reggio Emelia approach Music Spanish Gardening All studies are enriched with activities such as field trips, visitors, and parental involvement. Detailed Description of the Four Avenues Practical Life- Coordination and Control of Movement “Understand this avenue and you will understand Montessori philosophy”- Dr. Elisabeth Caspari Take the time to observe a young child from ages 3-6 and it is not difficult to see how much he or she moves. It as though they must be in constant motion. Practical life lessons unite the child’s need for movement with the need to learn practical skills. Lessons are set up to support coordination of movement, concentration, independence, character development, and preparation for writing, reading, and math. Sensorial Avenue Dr. Montessori saw education as having two aims: biological and social. It is the biological aim which is addressed by the Sensorial Avenue. Between the ages of 3 and 6, children experience rapid physical and mental growth. Their attention is affected by the immediate environment and is attracted more by stimuli than by reason. Sensorial lessons are designed to encourage focus and concentration by engaging the child’s senses. Through the sensorial avenue children learn to order and classify, develop precision and exactness in movement, communicate sensorial limitation to adults, refine the senses, and construct intellect.
