About Dr. Jonathan Brower Dr. Jonathan Brower is a licensed psychotherapist with over thirty years of clinical practice. Since 1999, Dr. Brower has provided Intensive Short-Term Dynamic Psychotherapy for anxiety and depression. He is an author, speaker, and national radio host. His life purpose is to help you unlock the unconscious experience so you no longer have to hide or punish yourself for simply being who you are. Raised by a mother struggling with high anxiety and a father with dysthymia, also known as chronic mild depression, young Jonathan Brower was deeply affected by the very real and disturbing reality of his parents’ disorders. By the age of 16, Jonathan was devouring books by and about Sigmund Freud to help him make sense of the most important people in his life – his family. This interest led to a lifetime of education earning him a PhD in Sociology with an emphasis on Social Psychology from the University of California, Santa Barbara. Realizing the tremendous healing power of psychotherapy, Dr. Brower immersed himself in his studies to earn a Masters Degree in Marriage and Family Therapy at California State University, Dominguez Hills. From there he committed himself to completing 3,000 hours of supervised therapy and passing the proper written and oral exams to receive his license as a therapist. Dr. Brower opened the doors to his private practice in 1984. He started rigorous training in 1996 to specialize in Intensive Short-Term Dynamic Psychotherapy, helping individuals, couples, and families discover the underlying causes linked to anxiety, depression, and stress. His work enables his patients to open their hearts and minds to their own mysterious behaviors and find the answers that will lead to a better life.

Over the years Marty has done many chemical dependency assessments for the courts, often as part of divorce proceedings involving child custody. He is credentialed to do assessments for the Department of Transportation, making treatment recommendations and establishing return-to-duty criteria for workers in safety-sensitive positions. Elected to the Ventura County Sports Hall of Fame in 2012, Marty was an all-CIF basketball player at Ventura High School and Channel League Player of the Year. A two year all-Conference selection at Brigham Young University, Marty excels at working with athletes on issues of entitlement, expectations, and disappointments — part of the adjustments to the loss of privilege as an athletic career comes to an end. Marty is a recovering person himself. He brings to his counseling not only his professional training, but also the experience of walking out his own recovery one day at a time. He helps his clients to gain a complete perspective on their recovery, addressing body, soul and spirit. He emphasizes the development of therapeutic relationships – with God, with self and with others.

Our Practice of psychotherapy is mainly with adults, and some adolescents. Most of the patients we see suffer from various emotional problems, such as depression, stress and anxiety, or relationship problems. Psychotherapy is not primarily about specific problems, important though they are, but has more to do with how one's problems are experienced, understood and dealt with individually. We all have some degree of emotional struggle and ways of protecting ourselves against emotional pain, but sometimes this is not effective enough. When these troubling emotions are examined and discussed in an atmosphere of acceptance and professional understanding, it is often possible to find more realistic and gratifying personal resolutions.
