Wyoming Seminary, or more affectionately known as "Sem," is the oldest coeducational independent college preparatory school in Northeastern Pennsylvania. At the time of its founding in 1844 by the Methodist Church, "seminary" was a common name for school. To this day, Wyoming Seminary maintains a connection with the Methodist Church but accepts students of all faiths. Although religious instruction is not part of our curriculum, a required Upper School course, "The Bible and Western Culture," and weekly chapels are designed to challenge young people with the values of our Christian heritage. Wilkes University is located in a historic section of downtown Wilkes-Barre. Complete with mature trees and green spaces, the 27-acre campus blends past and present. Each building has a unique and interesting history and a few are listed on the National Register of Historical Places. Many of the university's oldest mansions still have their original interiors, complete with distinctive stone fireplaces, stained glass windows, and carved wooden molding. Wilkes offers more than 35 undergraduate majors and concentrations, including education, engineering, biology and nursing; and, the six-year, doctor of pharmacy program in the Nesbitt College of Pharmacy and Nursing. For adult students, Wilkes offers seven graduate programs including the MBA and MFA as well as master's programs in education, engineering, math, nursing and creative writing.
