The word “Impossible” doesn’t mean much to Gerardo “Gerry Barrios when it comes to home furniture. In the hands of this reupholstering master, an “impossibly “ ugly old lounge chair can be transformed into a lovely piece of furniture; a hopelessly worn antique couch can almost always be restored to its original glory. Nor does Barrios, who owns G & D Custom Upholstery with his son, Elvis, find many “impossible” situations in customers’ homes where standard-size furniture doesn’t fit. Elvis visits the home, takes measurements and gives a free estimate as to how much it will cost for his father to build a custom piece of furniture to fit just right. “He’s very detailed, “said Elvis of his father, who began learning the trade of furniture reupholstering at age 12. “He’s a master. He likes to challenge himself and to inspire customers to come up with ideas that are even better than they thought possible.” Sometimes, the challenge is in building a piece of furniture from scratch. Here, Barrios and his son work closely with customers’ to design the perfect piece from the inside out. Springs, foam and even goose feathers may make up the interior; the exterior covering can be anything from leather and fabric to exotic animal hides – whether supplied by the customer or from G & D Custom Upholstery’s wide selection of coverings. Other times, customers bring in antique furniture that they either want reupholstered in its original style or updated to something more modern. Barrios knows all the tricks, such as how to work with old fashioned French nail heads. Then there are customers who want to alter existing pieces of furniture to fit their own tastes, such as one woman who didn’t like the big bulky arms and back on her recliner chair. She brought it to Barrios, who refined its shape so that the chair looked the way the customer wanted, with narrower arms and a more streamlined back, yet retained its original utility and comfort. Barrios will work with anything that can be upholstered – furniture, window cornices, headboards and anything else that fits the bill. He is highly respected in the custom-car community for the detailed work he does in classic automobiles – work which requires an unusually high level of skill and dedication.
